Roseville to get more 'user-friendly' Web site 
In an attempt to make their Web site easier to navigate, Roseville officials voted Tuesday night to hire an outside firm to streamline the site.

The days of staring at a glowing computer screen at home are over for Brad Triden.  He packs his laptop and heads to coffee shops and restaurants where he can get e-mails and scan the Internet without wired connections. The 29-year-old Ann Arbor resident said he can't wait for wireless access in city parks, at public beaches and in his 2002 Acura.

* Detroit: KATHLEEN GEORGE:  Internet Dominates Campus Life: Lots of computer time, little of it for academics 
When the rent on his East Lansing apartment is due, Mark Herberholz logs onto an Internet poker site for a few hands. He says the income from his winnings helps to pay the bills and pass the time. The Michigan State senior says he spends about four hours a day playing computer games, instant messaging with friends and surfing the Internet.

* Lamphere:
Students click into video learning
Lamphere High School students in Mary Ellen Bell's rather animated American literature class jumped at the chance to be quizzed on Harper Lee's classic novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird."  During a Thursday afternoon review session, students aimed remote control devices toward a chalkboard receiver and "clicked in" answers to sample test questions being projected on the board.

* Wayland: Church unites technology with worship
With the advent of modern technology-big screen TV, DVDs, the Internet-many churches are at a loss to benefit from this technology. Not so for the Wayland United Methodist Church. Complete with a tech team to support the new technology, the church uses hi-tech equipment to reach out to its congregation.

MIKE WENDLAND: School laptop project at risk
Michigan's grand vision of equipping every sixth-grade student in the state with a laptop computer may be no more. Once hailed as one of the nation's most progressive and ambitious technology learning projects, even a scaled-down version of the program -- which educators describe as a huge success -- will be eliminated if Gov. Jennifer Granholm gets her way.

* Royal Oak:
Use the Internet to pay traffic tickets
The 44th District Court in Royal Oak is now letting people with traffic violations pay for citations, fines and fees through the Internet. By using a credit card and logging onto the Government Payment Service, Inc., website, people can pay by giving the court's four-digit Pay Location Code, ticket_case number and the amount of money owed.

School introduces literacy programs
Reading Counts, and the new literacy movement at Cherry Creek Elementary School is proving it. Marie Paris, Cherry Creek Title I teacher, introduced two new forms of reading comprehension testing this fall - Reading Counts and the Scholastic Reading Inventory.

Caseville nets grant for laptops
Caseville Public School received $30,000 in Freedom to Learn Grant monies this month. Michigan's Freedom to Learn project (FTL) is one of education's technology integration initiatives. To reach the project's goal of one-to-one computing for all students, each of Caseville's sixth-graders will use a wireless laptop computer, bundled with a set of software, to reach the state's curriculum goals.
