Governor stops in for summer fun
The hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream, moonwalks and balloons made the event look like a neighborhood picnic, but this time one of the “locals” was Gov. Jennifer Granholm.  Granholm and a number of Macomb County Democrats generated a crowd of hundreds Aug. 8 at Shadyside Park to kick off their “Meets Greets & Eats” summer picnics that will be held around the county this month.

* Madison:  Madison District hires staff to address tech deficiencies

Madison District Board of Education members approved the hire of a new full-time technology supervisor to help get the district’s Web site, which has been out of order for as long as six months, and the community television channel which has been blank for several weeks, back in working order as an important communicative tool for the district.

* Linden:  Linden school board considering tech lab bid

At its Aug. 24 meeting, the Linden Community Schools Board of Education will consider a $176,959 bid for a technology education lab. The lab is for the new middle school being built near the athletic complex by Linden High School. The new Linden Middle School, paid for with money from the $35.6 million bond approved in 2003, is scheduled to open in January, 2006

Fingerprint technology has moved into the 21st century, and the Houghton County Sheriff's Department is going along for the ride with the recent purchase of a digital fingerprint machine.

Senate bill threatens local cable control
Townships are faced with a bill now in the U.S. Senate that could take away control over local cable franchises and put it in the hands of the federal government via a national franchising entity, according to Hartland Township's cable administrator, Felicia Jamieson.

Instead, it was the first step in a unique experiment to bring high-speed Internet connections to city residents through the same system that brings electricity to their homes.
