William P. Smith is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Blue Cross Blue
Shield of Michigan. In this role, Smith provides leadership to the Information Services
division, the corporate Project Management Office, corporate Business Process Improvement,
and Operational Effectiveness division.
Prior to this position, he was Senior Vice President of Operational Effectiveness. He also has
been Vice President and Chief of Staff, Vice President of Auto National Systems and Support, and
Vice President of Benefit Delivery Services Development and Support.
Smith joined Michigan Blue Shield in 1972 as a Management Trainee and held various staff and
management positions before becoming Vice President of Regular Business in 1985.
He has master's and bachelor's degrees in business administration from Central Michigan
University.
Smith has served on the board of directors for Health Care Network, Great Lakes.
He is former Chairman of the Regional Claims Association and is past President
of the Blues’ Five Year Club. Smith also has been active in the American Heart
Association.
